The Swap Spot: A Simple Way for Churches to Share God’s Love Practically
What if your church could create a space where generosity meets dignity - no strings attached? That’s the heart behind The Swap Spot, a simple initiative designed to help churches build community and meet practical needs, all while creating a warm, welcoming space where everyone feels seen.
So, what is The Swap Spot?
It’s a pop-up or permanent area within your church (or community space) where people can give and take freely. Clothing, shoes, baby items, school supplies, coats, books, household goods - whatever you no longer need, someone else might. And if someone’s in need? They can take what they need without cost, obligation, or explanation.
Think of it as a blessing box meets community wardrobe - a practical way to embody Isaiah 58 and the early church’s model of sharing what we have.
Why Churches?
Churches are already centres of care and community. The Swap Spot simply builds on that foundation by making generosity visible and accessible. It’s about stewardship, reducing waste, and creating a non-judgmental space for people to receive with dignity.
We know not everyone who needs help feels comfortable attending a food bank or applying for assistance. But stepping into a church to browse a rack of donated coats or pick up a school backpack for their child? That’s often a softer first step - and one that could lead to deeper connections.

How It Works: Simple & Flexible
The Swap Spot is designed to be flexible. It could look like:
A dedicated corner in your foyer
A table in your café after Sunday service
A pop-up event during school holidays
A partnership with a local school, shelter, or family centre
All you need is a rack, table, or shelf, a few donation bins, and a sign explaining how it works: “Take what you need. Leave what you can.”
Some churches add a prayer wall, a verse of the week, or even a coffee station to help build relationships naturally. It’s not just about things - it’s about community.
